Michelin motorsport partners

Toyota & Michelin

Together on Several Fronts

For more than two decades, Michelin has supported the world’s largest car manufacturer in all of its sporting programmes from rallying to endurance racing and Formula 1...

In motorsport, the partnership between Toyota and Michelin officially began in the 1993 FIA World Rally Championship, with a maiden victory in the snow on the Swedish Rally.

The following year, the Franco-Japanese alliance achieved world championship title glory in both the Manufacturers' and Drivers’ contests, repeating the feat in 1994.

The two brands’ successful relationship subsequently extended into endurance racing – with a second-place finish in the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1999 – and later Formula 1 at the beginning of the new millennium where, together, Michelin and Toyota claimed three pole positions and 13 podium finishes.

Since returning to Le Mans and endurance racing with Michelin in 2012, Toyota’s hybrid prototypes have tallied ten triumphs and lifted the Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ World Endurance Championship (WEC) laurels in 2014.

In 2017, Michelin will again partner Toyota when the Japanese manufacturer officially re-joins the FIA World Rally Championship. In preparation for this, the two companies are currently working tirelessly to develop the new Yaris WRC.

The Toyota/Michelin partnership in figures:

  • 3 WRC Manufacturers’ titles
  • 18 WRC victories
  • 1 WEC Manufacturers’ title and 1 Drivers’ title
  • 10 WEC victories
  • 4th in the F1 Constructors’ world championship (2005)
  • 3 pole positions and 13 podiums in F1
